VIETNAM

There & Black

This book was written over fifty years after the author’s service in Vietnam and it describes his experience in the post Tet Offensive era and the harsh treatment veterans received when they returned to an increasingly anti-war America.

This memoir takes readers into the life of a 19-year-old combat medic, Jim “Doc” Purtell, who served during the Vietnam War. In vivid, harrowing detail, Purtell recounts his experiences during the Tet Offensive and the emotional battles he faced, both in Vietnam and upon returning to a divided America. His journey is raw and uncensored, shedding light on the horrors of war and the struggle veterans endured post-service.

VIETNAM -THERE & BACK

I n 1967, Jim Purtell left his small Midwestern town to join the U.S. Army. He did so at a time when the country was pro-Vietnam and serving seemed an honorable thing to do. Little did he know that the tide would turn a mere six months later as drastically as it did. VIETNAM: THERE AND BACK is a candid account of the time when he and several other combat vets found themselves conducting operations in the jungles of Vietnam during and after the Tet Offensive. Purtell describes in gritty detail what it was like to live and fight with an infantry company only to return to anti-Vietnam sentiment so strong that he and his fellow veterans felt nobody cared about them or the sacrifices they made.

VIETNAM -SOLDIER STORIES AND SONGS

Truth cuts to the bone. It cannot be altered or spun to be something else. Truth speaks to us regardless of language or culture and it needs to be constant. One element that comes through in these engaging stories and songs in this unique book is the authenticity with regard to the Vietnam War, and the soldiers who fought it, those who were left behind, and the impact it had on the survivors upon returning home. The 37 stories and original songs speak to the Vietnam veteran experience in combat in Vietnam, the unsettled POW/MIA issue and the difficult re-entry back to the U.S., for Vietnam veterans.

Open Dropbar

There are also stories and songs about PTSD, veteran homelessness, veteran suicide, Agent Orange and stolen valor. The author, Jim Purtell, is a combat Vietnam veteran having served as a medic with the infantry in 1968-69, and is one of the most prolific songwriters of the Vietnam experience.

He was influenced by the great singer-songwriters of the 1970’s who were skilled in their storytelling and that’s what he does – tell stories.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Vietnam War and the men and women who fought there, and the life changing impact the war had on the combatants, or how stories become songs, or if you enjoy original music, be sure to add this book to your collection!

BOOK REVIEWS

TROY DOWELL Thank you for your story.

I can not imagine the fear or the sorrow of such an experience. The change that must take place in one's mind when fear of death as well as the fear and heartache of loss is constantly all you think about. I thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read this very personal time in his life.

Greg 5.0 out of 5 stars Great book. I was a combat medic in Nam ...

Great book. I was a combat medic in Nam at the same time Jim was. His feelings and experiences as a medic are those many of us experienced at such young ages. Dealing with those traumas takes a long time. Jim modestly talks about his bravery and tells us of the horrors that go with that bravery. Jim wrote this in a style most combat vets and civilians can relate to. Definitely recommended.

William E. Peterson Well done

There and Back was very well written. I was sorry when it came to an end. I was a Huey crew chief/gunner with the 1st Air Cav. Many guys survived because of the heroic medics.
